Obituary of Margaret Elizabeth Donaghy

Margaret Elizabeth"Betty" (Brownson) Donaghy died peacefully on July 12, 2018 at the Care Center at Sunset Lake ( Sullivan County Adult Care Center) in Liberty, NY where she resided for the past 9 years,  She is survived by her six children; Elizabeth, William (Denise), Kathleen (Gary), Mary, Margaret and James (Linda).  She had 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Donaghy was born in New York on June 18, 1917.  She was the only child of Margaret (Shuttleworth) and James Brownson.  Prior to her adolescence, the family moved to Douglaston on Long Island.  She was a buyer for the wedding department of Lord and Taylor.  When the war broke out she volunteered with the American Red Cross to roll bandages and to write to servicemen overseas.

She met her husband, William J. Donaghy sr. through this correspondence and they were married on November 6, 1945.  They lived in Nassau County with their growing family until 1955 when her husband took a position with the Boy Scouts as manager of their summer camp, Onteora, in the Catskills.  The family moved to Livingston Manor, NY.

During her time there, she learned to drive, worked as a summer mail carrier for the camps in the area and, with her husband, began the Livingston Manor Ambulance Corps.  Prior to her residence at the Care Facility, she would often volunteer at the Liberty Elementary School as an unofficial aid and could be seen riding her bicycle around town.

The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks for the care given to Margaret during her residence at the Sullivan County Adult Care Facility.

Visitation will be held from 2 - 4 pm on Sunday, July 15th at Colonial-Ramsay Funeral Home, 275 South Main St. Liberty, NY 12754. A funeral service will be held at 3pm. Rev. Bridgette LeConey will officiate.
