Home: Liberty, New York USA Place of Birth: Glen Burnie, Maryland USA Obituary Rita Mortensen Liberty, NY June 22, 1952 - May 31, 2016 Rita Mortensen passed away on May 31, 2016. It was June 22, 1952 in Glen Burnie, MD, that she was born the second of five children to Fern Garnett (Lutkins) and Charles Schewe. Rita lived a challenging life in which she battled a progressive eye disease and other health issues. None of these concerns stopped her from becoming a fulfilled person, ever resourceful in meeting all challenges that came her way. She spent most of her adult life in Brooklyn, NY where she was known for her kindness and generosity-always willing to help others in need. Although sight was a challenge for her in this life, she explored the streets of Sheepshead Bay and was known to all who lived there. In 2002, she, along with her mother, relocated to Liberty, NY. There too, in her adopted community, she explored the streets of her new home and become known and loved by many as a gentle person with a kind, loving heart. Rita was mother to four children, and had 10 grandchildren. David Burke, her eldest son has two children, Jennifer Garcia and Cynthia Burke. Her second child, Michael Burke married Michelle Da Silva and they have one daughter, Brynn Burke. Her third child and oldest daughter, Fern Burke married Eddie Drumgole (who passed in 2015) and their children are Kaila, Brandonn and Love Drumgole. Her youngest child, Christina Burke, married Gavin Gutierrez and they have four children, Mark and Kaitlyn (Miller) and Amelia and Grace (Gutierrez). Rita is further survived by her mother, Fern Lutkins of Liberty, NY; sisters Lela Walker of Eagle Lake, FL, and Renee Clepper of Alexandria, VA; and brother Frank Sandi of Keansburg, NJ, as well as, many nieces and nephews. Rita joins "in that better place", her sister, Gwen Pratt, who passed in 2011. A Service and Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, June 25th at 3:00 at Ramsay's Funeral Home, 275 South Main Street, Liberty, NY, and will be followed by a reception at 4:30 at Charlie's Restaurant, 77 N.
