Obituary of Gustav Strang

Gus was born in Scheer a/d Donau, Germany on September 12, 1929 as an American citizen to Walter and Magdalena (Linder) Strang-Wolf. Gus passed away peacefully at home on June 6, 2018.

 

He immigrated to the United States in 1948 and was drafted into the Army in 1951 during the Korean War. He was stationed in Salzburg, Austria and became a Sergeant in the Military Intelligence Service. His wife Rose, whom he married May 20, 1951, was able to live off-post with him in Saltzberg, Austria. Gus and Rose recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. 

 

After the Army, Gus was a custom cabinet maker and carpenter with woodworking skills learned in Germany. He moved to Monticello in 1964 where he was an independent contractor building custom homes and furniture. He was also employed at Wyde Lumber Company.

 

He is survived by his beloved wife Rose Mary (Ruff) Strang and their 6 children; Susan Mahan of Monticello, Michael Strang of Mongaup Valley, Barbara Ketcham (Evan) of Monticello, Peter Strang (April) of Monticello, John Strang (Judy) of Monticello and Rose Comfort (Ron) of Woodbourne.

 

He leaves behind nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and one brother Xavier Strang-Wolf of Florida. He was predeceased by three brothers Walter, Ernst and Egon and two sisters, Trudy and Johanna, sisters-in-law Stefi and Rosemarie and one son-in-law James B. Mahan III.

 

Visitation will be at Colonial-Ramsay Funeral Home, 55 St. John Street Monticello, NY from 4-7:00pm on Saturday, June 9, 2018. A Celebration of Life will be held at the funeral home at 6:30pm. Interment will be held privately at Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
