Obituary of Martin K. Steigler

Home: Kingston, New York USA Place of Birth: Queens, New York USA Martin K. Steigler Kingston, NY Martin K. Steigler, a Kingston city resident, died on Saturday May 17 at Albany Stratton VA Hospital surrounded by family. He was 57. The son of George B. Steigler Jr. and Veronica Haley, Martin was born on January 6, 1957 in Queens, NY. He was a veteran of both the US Army and US Navy. While in the Navy, Martin was proud to have served on board the USS Bowen. The USS Bowen earned recognition as the first US warship to participate in hostile fire in the Mediterranean since World War II as she fired as many as 75 shells at hostile enemy targets in defense of a group of US Marines who were under attack. Martin received Meritorious Unit Commendation Award, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Navy Unit Commendation and three Sea Service Deployment Ribbons. Martin's many additional accomplishments include: Volunteer Firefighter for the Smallwood-Mongaup Valley Fire Department, Licensed Scuba Diver, Journeyman in Local 19 Carpenter's Union, Founder of A.I.R. (Anglers in Recovery) of Orange County, President and Co-Founder of U.B.C. 19 Motorcycle Club, owner of Concrete Impressions, and proud member of The American Legion Post 72BC in Saugerties, NY. Marty enjoyed family, friends and the great outdoors. Activities included spirituality with nature, reading, exercise, cooking and gardening. He was an avid fisherman and motorcyclist. Martin is survived by a very large immediate family of 2 brothers, 5 sisters, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He is also survived by his son Martin and granddaughter, Kinley. He was predeceased by both his parents and 1 brother. According to his wishes, cremation will be private. Visitation hours will be held on Saturday May 24, 2014 from 1-3 PM at Ramsey's Funeral Home, located at 3435 RT 55, Kauneonga Lake, NY immediately followed by a memorial service. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Stratton VA Hospital Hospice Ward, 113 Holland Ave., Albany, NY 12208 and the American Cancer Society-Memorial Processing, 6725 Lyons St. East Syracuse, NY 13057.
